ChocoDoom

This is a personal weapon mod I've been tinkering with on and off again with since about 2014 or so. Originally, it came about simply because I thought having a man-portable, pistol caliber autocannon in Doom didn't really make sense, so I replaced the chaingun sprites with the beta SMG sprite that Realm667 has available. That was kinda that point originally -- a "chocolate" (rather than vanilla) Doom mod to correct little issues like that.

Over time, I made a version using the beta rifle sprites, then started tinkering with DECORATE and added things like reloading, various effects to make the weapons feel like they have more "unf" to them, etc. Over the course of time, I just ended up with this personal tinker project that I would play Doom with, adding and removing things as things appealed to me.

Anyway, the project's in a state where I think other's might enjoy it, so here's an upload of several versions of this personal mod of mine.

There are 4 major versions of the project: a pistol and rifle variant with additional features for GZDoom, and pistol and rifle versions that are vanilla compatible and are just sprite replacement. Take your pick!

Features (GZDoom versions)

  • Weapons have reloading.
  • Weapons now have smoke, quake, and other visual effects.
  • Hitscans have muzzle rise
  • Hitscans use a tracer for visual effect.
  • New sounds
  • SSG has a single barrel alt-fire
  • Instant weapon raise/lower for faster weapon swaps
  • Pistol version replaces chaingun with SMG.
  • Rifle version swaps the pistol and chaingun for variants of the Doom beta rifles.

Most of the weapon sprites are base Doom assets, so you really need to see the mod in motion. These are from the GZDoom versions.

Some of the resources in this were taken from other wads and sources. From what I can recall:

  • The shell casings and smoke effect sprites were taking from iSpook's Shut up and bleed
  • The pistol sound was taken also from Shut up and Bleed.
  • The shotgun, SSG and chaingun sounds were taken from Tango's Supercharge.
    • These resources in turn come from other authors who are individually referenced in that wad's credits lump
  • The bullet decals and tracer sprites were taken from Supercharge
  • All monster sprite replacements, and the firearm replacements are Realm667 assets.

If anyone has an issue with what has used, tell me and we'll find a remedy.

All of these resources, as far as I understand are free to use with attribution, and any of my own original sprites used in the mod are also free to use.
